This fall, Washington County 4-H welcomed youth back to STEM Sparks Discovery Lab for a special Spooky Edition: Lava Monsters and Magic Potions, and the results were nothing short of magical. Young scientists joined us virtually for an evening of hands-on exploration, investigating density, experimenting with chemical reactions, and creating bubbling “magic potions” from common household materials.

Led by our 4-H volunteer instructor, Sarah Speck, Engineering Manager at Franklin Energy, and her two youth 4-H Project leaders, participants discovered that science can be both fun and engaging while developing important skills that extend far beyond the experiment itself.
Finding the Spark Through STEM
At the heart of STEM Sparks Discovery Lab is the belief that every young person has the potential to discover a Spark. In 4-H, a Spark is an interest or passion that excites youth, motivates them to learn, and helps them see possibilities for their future.
During our October virtual session, youth explored questions such as Why do some objects float while others sink? What happens when different substances interact? How can we make predictions and test our ideas? Through these experiences, participants practiced the habits of scientists and engineers while building confidence in their own abilities.
Learning Through Curiosity and Discovery
Our Spooky Edition focused on the concepts of density and chemical reactions, but the learning went much deeper than science content.
Participants demonstrated:
- Curiosity and Exploration by testing objects and making predictions about density.
- Critical Thinking as they observed reactions and analyzed results.
- Problem-Solving Skills by asking questions and adjusting their thinking based on new discoveries.
- Confidence and Independence through hands-on participation in experiments from their own homes.
Programs like STEM Sparks Discovery Lab provide opportunities for youth to engage in meaningful learning experiences while connecting with positive adult mentors and role models in STEM careers.
Looking Ahead to 2027
The enthusiasm and engagement we have seen throughout the STEM Sparks Discovery Lab series have reinforced the value of creating spaces where youth can explore, experiment, and discover their interests.
We are excited to announce that STEM Sparks Discovery Lab will return in January 2027 with new activities, new scientific challenges, and more opportunities for youth to connect with STEM professionals. Families can look forward to another season of virtual hands-on learning designed to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of innovators, engineers, scientists, and problem-solvers.
Thank you to our volunteer presenters, families, and young scientists for making this year’s sessions a success. We look forward to continuing the journey together in 2027 and helping even more youth discover their Spark.
