Washington County 4-H officially launched our brand new STEM Sparks Discovery Lab virtual series this week, and the energy was electric! While the immediate goal was building Potential Energy Poppers, the true mission was something much deeper: Finding the “Spark.”
What is a “Spark”?
In 4-H, a “Spark” is more than just a hobby—it’s an interest or passion that lights a fire in a young person’s life. Research shows that when youth discover their Spark, they feel healthier, achieve more in school, and have a deeper sense of purpose. Our STEM Sparks Discovery Lab is designed to be that high-quality space where curiosity meets opportunity.
From Potential Energy to Personal Growth
Guided by our lead instructor, Sarah Speck (Engineering Manager at Franklin Energy), our elementary researchers didn’t just learn about physics—they practiced the building blocks of Thriving:
- Challenge & Discovery: Students took on the engineering challenge of building a functional launcher, showing an intrinsic desire to try something new.
- Growth Mindset: When a knot was hard to tie or a projectile didn’t fly straight, our youth emphasized effort over innate ability, troubleshooting their way to success.
- Developmental Relationships: By connecting with a professional mentor like Sarah, youth saw a “hopeful purpose” for their own futures in STEM.
The Power of the 4-H Context
By providing a space where youth feel they belong, challenging them to grow, and sharing the power of discovery, we are doing more than just a one-hour project. We are investing in long-term outcomes.
Youth who thrive in 4-H today are more likely to grow into adults who find success in their chosen vocations, lead with a pro-social orientation, and contribute generously to their communities.
The Mission Continues
We have three more sessions ahead, and each one is a new chance for a student to find the Spark that expresses the essence of who they are. Whether they loved the math, the building, or the teamwork, we are here to fan those flames!
Thank you for being part of this investment in our youth’s long-term well-being. Let’s keep the sparks flying!
