At Washington County 4-H, we believe that education happens everywhere—not just in club meetings or at the county fair. Bringing 4-H out into the community allows us to inspire young minds, build lasting local partnerships, and showcase the incredible talent and dedication of our youth leaders.
This past season, 4-H teamed up with the Slinger Library for a series of interactive, high-energy outreach programs designed to bring hands-on STEM education and agricultural learning directly to local families:
Coding in Motion: LEGO Robotics
Youth dove headfirst into the world of engineering and computer science through our LEGO Robotics session. Participants designed, built, and programmed their own robotic creations, learning critical thinking, problem-solving, and basic coding principles while discovering how fun STEM can be.
Creative Circuitry: Makey Makey
We turned everyday objects into interactive touchpads using Makey Makey kits! Kids explored closed circuits, conductivity, and hardware engineering by turning everyday items into computer keys. It was a high-energy, creative way to demystify electronics and spark interest in electrical engineering.
Storytime Meets the Farm: 4-H Llamas Visit the Library
STEM wasn’t the only focus—animal science took center stage during a special library storytime! Our 4-H llama project members brought their llamas to the library, sharing their first-hand knowledge about llama care, behavior, and what it’s like to participate in the 4-H llama project. Young attendees got an up-close look at these gentle animals while learning directly from youth mentors who exemplified true leadership in action.
Why Community Outreach Matters
Programs like these do more than just offer a fun afternoon activity—they lower barriers to high-quality STEM and agricultural education. By meeting families where they are, 4-H helps ignite new passions, builds confidence, and strengthens our community ties.
