It’s Never Too Early to Start Planning AHEAD

End-of-Life planning is an important process that every person should consider as they age. Many times, end-of-life planning is viewed as something that happens as one reaches retirement age. However, planning and decision-making as early as one’s 30s, the 40s, and 50s can significantly reduce stress, time, and cost in the end-of-life planning process for both you and your loved ones. According to the Conversation Project National Survey of 2018, 92% of people say that talking with their loved ones about end of life care is important….however, only 32% have actually done it. This is something that many people still find challenging to talk about with their family and friends.

Planning AHEAD is a new program from UW-Madison Division of Extension, created to address most aspects of end-of-life planning. In 1-hour workshops, Extension Educators guide participants through examining health care wishes, financial responsibilities, legal requirements and documentation, distribution of personal property, end-of-life decisions, dealing with grief, and the emotional ramifications of all of the above. The program is designed both for those who want to prepare for their own passing, to make things easier for family members, and for those who have, or are in the process of, losing a loved one and are dealing with the transition.

This course features an online planning workbook to help organize the tasks and documents associated with end-of-life decisions. By working through these sessions, participants find that the financial, healthcare, and other decisions don’t feel so overwhelming. Washington County residents are invited to join Planning AHEAD, a free in-person course facilitated by Carol Bralich, Human Development and Relationships Educator and Jennifer Fechter, ADRC Elder Benefits Specialist. Workshops are Wednesdays starting January 18th through March 1st from 6:00 – 7:00pm. Program will be held at the Washington County Public Agency Center at 333 E. Washington St. Room 3224 , West Bend. Questions can be sent to for more information about Planning AHEAD. The upcoming program information can be found here the program website at:
